How your Wi-Fi router and devices were made makes a difference

Learn how to go from fast to faster.

Every room in your home, connected

With an easy-to-set-up, seamless mesh network.

Get corner-to-corner coverage across your home with a mesh-ready Wi-Fi network. Even in those hard to reach places.

Our plans come with everything you need to set up a home network that weaves (or meshes) together, including an advanced router and mesh extender.

What do you get with our Wi-Fi?

Get the best speeds on your devices.

Just like Wi-Fi routers, your connected devices (like your tablet and gaming console) were also built on a Wi-Fi standard 鈥 which impacts the Wi-Fi speeds you鈥檒l be able to receive on those devices.

What鈥檚 next for Wi-Fi?

You鈥檙e asking the right question. In fact, it鈥檚 the same question we ask ourselves at GFiber all the time. While we鈥檙e jam-packed with the latest in Wi-Fi technology now, we鈥檙e leading the industry in engineering the future of internet tech.

That means we鈥檙e always looking ahead to what the next generation of Wi-Fi will be (like Wi-Fi 7) 鈥 and what could be.

FAQs

How does Wi-Fi work?

Wi-Fi uses radio waves to send and receive signals from your wireless router. These radio waves connect your devices to the internet. Wi-Fi transmits at frequencies of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz 鈥 and now, with Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, 6 GHz. Generally, the higher the frequency, the faster the data transmission. .

What鈥檚 a wireless router?

A wireless router is what lets your wireless devices connect to the internet. With a traditional router, all wireless traffic on your devices rely on that single point of access (the router) 鈥 instead of the multiple points you鈥檇 get with a mesh network. The reach of a traditional router is limited by the size of the antennas, and walls can often get in the way of the signal. You can use an extender to give you more 鈥渞each,鈥 but it may not always cover some corners of your home.

What鈥檚 the difference between Wi-Fi and a wired connection?

You can connect to the internet either wired or wirelessly. A wired connection requires an ethernet cord to connect your device directly to the internet. A wired connection will generally allow you to get the maximum speed available at your home, which means it will usually be faster.

Wi-Fi (or a wireless connection) allows you to connect Wi-Fi-enabled devices to the internet without cables. Instead, you use a wireless router. Wi-Fi can sometimes have interferences that may slow down the speed of your connection.

What鈥檚 a mesh network?

A mesh network uses multiple access points (extenders) that communicate with each other to give your whole home seamless Wi-Fi coverage. A mesh network provides you with further reach than you鈥檇 get with a single traditional router. Every gigabit and multi-gigabit GFiber plan comes with mesh Wi-Fi.

FAQs

Will GFiber include everything I need to get my Wi-Fi started?

Yes, generally. Depending on your plan, your internet will come with a router and up to two extenders, depending on the plan. However, if your home requires more than two extenders, we can provide you with additional extenders for a one-time fee. This is typically only necessary if your home is larger than 3,000 square feet or has an atypical layout.

And with your multi-gig plan, you鈥檒l get to use GFiber Wi-Fi 6E Router and a Wi-Fi 6E Mesh Extender to handle even more wireless devices without interruptions, congestion, or dead zones.

Is there a fee for GFiber Wi-Fi?

GFiber does not charge extra for Wi-Fi and you鈥檒l receive up to two extenders based on your plan. Additional extenders can be purchased and are between $85 and $120 depending on the type of plan and router you have.

Using your own router

FAQs

Can I use my own router?

You are always welcome to use your own router with any of our plans.

What requirements must my router meet?

To use your own router, we recommend your router meets the following specs:

GFiber 1 Gig

  • Wi-Fi 6 or newer Router
  • 1 Gbps or faster WAN port
  • 2.5 Gbps or faster LAN ports

GFiber 2 Gig or higher plans

  • Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 Router
  • 2.5 Gbps or faster WAN port
  • One 10 Gbps LAN port and multiple 2.5 Gbps LAN ports
